  • A sad day

‘For really I think that the poorest he that is in England hath a life to live, as the greatest he; and therefore… every man that is to live under a government ought first by his own consent to put himself under that government’ (Col. Rainborough, Putney Debates, 1647)

Giles Fraser, who has just resigned as canon chancellor of St Paul’s Cathedral was previously vicar of St Mary’s, Putney, where those words were spoken.  They seem more in tune with the Occupy protestors than with the decisions of the chapter or the interests of the City.

I fear that Giles Fraser’s resignation means that the cathedral authorities plan to sanction - or encourage - violence to clear the protesters.
